Collecting the award from a beaming Dermot O’Leary a clearly emotional David gave a brief speech after receiving a standing ovation. Saying later: “I was very close to crying when I received that extraordinary ovation tonight at the NTAs. I know exactly why I did it. Because I’ve seen how the money raised helps people around the world.”

At the party the Britain’s Got Talent team said: “There’s a whole lot of love at the National TV Awards for charity swimmer & Landmark Award winner David Walliams Water star. Boom boom!”
While Ant and Dec said: “David is brilliant. He’s winding Simon up a treat.”
Michael McIntyre revealed: “I had tea with David Walliams at Claridges and he’ll be brilliant. He was very charming and media savvy and we had a nice chat.”
